Calling everyone interested in creativity; artists, academics, creatives, teachers, community leaders, students and curious minds

The world is facing some big challenges—from climate change to conflicts and declining trust in leadership and the democratic systems that put them there. How can creativity help us rise to these challenges? And what role can cities, universities, and artists play in shaping a better future?

Come along to a relaxed and collaborative afternoon where your voice matters. Together, we’ll explore how storytelling, performance, music, writing, and the arts can help strengthen our communities and reimagine what democracy could look like. Bring your own questions, and let’s find fresh perspectives together.

Why this matters?

This conversation is inspired by a question being explored this year by one of our Visiting Fellows, theatre maker and arts leader Erica Whyman:

Should we take the radical curiosity of artists more seriously? And if so, how can universities and cities help creativity thrive? Read Erica’s personal invitation to you

The city of Oxford—with its diversity, global reach, and the very real hardship in many of its communities—is the perfect place to think about these questions. But the conversation is not about answers from one person—it’s about all of us. Whether you’re an artist, teacher, researcher, student, community leader, or just curious, your perspective is welcome.

Taking place over an afternoon, the session is designed to be informal, interactive, and engaging, giving everyone the chance to contribute.

What to Expect

  • A warm welcome – We will begin with an introduction to the central question and time to reflect and connect with others.
  • Shape the conversation – Propose topics or questions you’d like to explore – big ideas, personal experiences, or practical suggestions – these will help shape the agenda.
  • Join in at your own pace – Whether you want to actively contribute, or simply listen, there’s no wrong way to take part.
  • Creative collaboration – We’ll use theatre-inspired techniques to create a space for fresh ideas and meaningful conversation.

By the end, you’ll leave with new perspectives and connections to inspire action and creativity.

Meet the facilitators

Erica Whyman
Erica is a theatre maker, facilitator, and Visiting Fellow at Wadham College with over 25 years of leadership in the arts. As the Creative Lead for the Leys Festival and a champion for using creativity to strengthen communities, she is passionate about exploring the transformative role of the arts.

Lee Simpson
Lee Simpson is the Co-Artistic Director of the award-winning theatre company Improbable.

He will facilitate the conversation in Open Space, a democratic and inclusive format that empowers participants to explore issues or ideas together that they care about most. Open Space has been used everywhere—from community workshops to international peace talks— to ensure we do the work that we want to do together.

Why should you join us?

Creativity is a powerful tool for change. Let’s talk about how we can use it to rise to the challenges of our time, support artists and storytellers, and build stronger connections across our communities.

Bring your curiosity and questions for an inspiring afternoon of imagination, collaboration, and fresh perspectives.
