AFRICAN BUSH ELEPHANT

Scientific name: Loxodonta africana

The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), the largest land animal on Earth, is celebrated for its impressive size, intelligence, and commanding presence. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, this magnificent creature can weigh up to 12,000 pounds and stand over 13 feet tall at the shoulder.

Despite its immense stature, the delicate eyelashes poignantly remind us of this sentient being’s fragility as an endangered species.

Many of the animals Flach has photographed are iconic, some lesser-known. Several are recognised the world over, and it is surprising to find them on the brink of extinction, animals still proudly represented in films and books as cuddly toys in the menagerie of a child’s bedroom.
