CUBAN CROCODILE

Scientific name: Crocodylus rhombifer

The Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) stands out with its vibrant, speckled yellow-green skin and is known for its unusual agility, making it somewhat “terrestrial” compared to other crocodiles.

Despite its fierce reputation, this remarkable reptile is critically endangered, with estimated fewer than 5,000 individuals left in the wild. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting, and hybridization with the American crocodile.

Fortunately, conservation efforts are underway to protect this unique species, which has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. By safeguarding the Cuban crocodile, we’re not only ensuring the survival of a formidable predator but a living link to our planet’s ancient past.
