indian gharial

Scientific name: Gavialis gangeticus

This critically endangered Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) from Northern India has evolved into a specialised fish-eating crocodilian, sporting a distinctive, Pinocchio-like slender snout perfectly adapted to reduce drag as it slices through the water.

At six months old, he’s about the length of your arm, but with time, he could grow into an imposing giant, reaching up to 20 feet (6 metres) long. His unique adaptations make him an extraordinary predator but also highlight the urgency of conserving this remarkable species.
